There are some surprising ways to live longer that you can implement to add years to your life. Benjamin Franklin said, “Early to bed, and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

Getting the rest that you need not only gives your muscles the time they need to stay healthy, but it’s also important for good mental health, too. Without the proper amount of sleep, it’s harder for the brain to function and many studies have been done on the effects of sleep deprivation and how it affects judgment and the ability to make right decisions.

Of course you know that a regular exercise routine gives you an edge over those who don’t exercise or who exercise in a hit and miss fashion. Exercise works out your muscles, helps relieve stress and gets your heart pumping.

Since the heart is a muscle, it needs exercise to keep beating strong. Learn how to let things go. Irritants can lead to major stress and stress to a shorter lifespan. Keep a good focus when situations turn out to be less desirable than you’d like them to be.

Of the ways to live longer, make sure that you maintain healthy relationships. Being in a relationship with a toxic person can drain you mentally, emotionally and physically and all three will take a toll on your health.

If you absolutely can’t get out of having a toxic person in your life, try not to engage with them on a regular basis. If you live life in the fast lane, get out. There’s no rush on having it all today. You’ve heard the phrase, “Take the time to stop and smell the roses” and it’s true. Slow down. You don’t have to accomplish everything today.

Be careful what you think about – where you allow your thoughts to stay. Dwelling on negative situations or negative thoughts can have a bad influence on your physical health. Negativity attracts negativity.

While you don’t have to pretend and you don’t have to be ‘sunny side up’ all the time, know that when tough things occur, they don’t last forever. There’s an end and you will arrive. Learn how to see the positive in all that you can.

Saying goodbye to bad habits is among the ways to live longer, too. If you have any kind of habit that isn’t the best for your body, make up your mind that this is the year that you’ll finally gain the victory over that habit – whether it’s smoking, drinking to excess, overeating or overspending (which creating stress) then take the steps you need to take to get free from those bonds.

If you need to boost your immune system, start taking vitamins or health supplements. Look for foods or products that promote anti-aging. You can find many of these products online and you’d be surprised at how much better you feel.
